Richard McIntyre sustains a long and distinguished career as a multi-faceted musician - bassoonist, teacher, conductor, and arranger. He graduated from Sydney University in 1970, as Bachelor of Music (majoring in Composition), and was the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Associate Principal Bassoonist from 1968-78. During this time he began to manifest his great love of teaching with substantial work at the NSW State Conservatorium, and also began a life-long contribution as conductor and arranger. In 1976-7 he studied conducting with Robert Barclay Wilson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. In 1978 he moved to Canberra as the School of Music’s Lecturer in Bassoon, and has been Senior Lecturer since 1990. As a bassoonist he has performed with many of Australia’s leading chamber ensembles over more than thirty-five years. He is a foundation member of Australia’s foremost wind quintet, the internationally-acclaimed Canberra Wind Soloists - now in its twenty-fifth year of continuous operation - and has given this quintet a unique repertoire with his revered arrangements of large-scale orchestral works. He has maintained his strong interest in orchestral performance, as Guest Principal with the Sydney Symphony and other Symphony Australia orchestras, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and as Principal Bassoon with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. He has been bassoon soloist with Symphony Australia and other orchestras on many occasions; his recital repertoire has extended from the 16th century to the multiphonic avant garde. His bassoon-teaching activity has always embraced work with all levels of student, from elementary to post-graduate, and has taken him throughout Australasia and Asia. Many former pupils have established themselves firmly at the top of the performance profession in Australia and overseas, both in modern and “historically informed” performance arenas. As a conductor, Richard McIntyre has worked extensively with a wide variety of resources, and within symphonic, choral, opera, ballet, and chamber repertoires. From 1981 to 1990 he was Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Canberra Youth Orchestra, leading it on several highly-successful European concert tours, and vastly broadening its endeavour. During the following decade he performed highly-significant work with the Canberra School of Music Symphony Orchestra, and his great ability in obtaining professional artistic results from young musicians has been widely recognized. In 1986 he was named Canberran of the Year, in 1991 he received an Advance Australia Award and a Sounds Australian National Critics’ Award, and in 1992, the Order of Australia Medal. Since 1992 he has been Music Director of The Llewellyn Choir, whose standard and repertoire he has developed greatly; he has inaugurated the Canberra Chamber Orchestra as its professional accompanying orchestra. From 2000 to 2002 he was Music Director of Canberra’s premier chamber choir, the Oriana Chorale. Whilst having been a key figure in the practical development of the ANU School of Music’s international reputation as a centre of excellence in performance training, he has also fulfilled many administrative and coordination responsibilities over his 26-year association. He has always been highly active in community outreach activities, chiefly as a conductor. Recent endeavour has included the development of highly-successful and popular choral/orchestral performance weekends in Armidale NSW, and work with the Barrier Reef Orchestra in Townsville, Queensland. |
