With an enviable reputation as one of Europe's leading young conductors, Jonathan Grieves-Smith has worked with many of the world's finest orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Halle, Orchestre National de Lille, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony, London Mozart Players, Bournemouth Sinfonietta and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Jonathan Grieves-Smith conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Brighton Festival Chorus in an acclaimed performance of Mendelssohn's Symphony No 2 'Lobgesang' at the 1997 Brighton International Festival. With only one hour's notice he made his debut with the Halle Orchestra leading to an immediate invitation to tour with soloists Bryn Terfel and Tasmin Little. A thrilling debut performance of Beethoven Symphony No 7 has led to a strong relationship with the London Mozart Players that included a tour to Brazil with pianist Nelson Freire in 2000 and appearances at the Windsor Festival and a tour to Buenos Aires, Rio de Janiero and Sao Paolo in 2003.

Jonathan Grieves-Smith conducted a highly successful tour of Italy and South America with the Coro dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia di Roma and Salzburger Kammervirtuosen in April 1998. With the Orchestre National de Lille he gave the first modern performances of Charles Tournemire's Ouessant Symphony in France and England. His German debut was with the Bochumer Symphoniker and in 2000 he made his New Zealand debuts with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia with violinist Adele Anthony.

In December 1998 Jonathan Grieves-Smith made his debut with the Melbourne Symphony and Queensland Symphony conducting a further six concerts with the Melbourne Symphony in 1999 and making his debut with the Tasmanian Symphony. He conducted an outstanding performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the State Orchestra of Victoria and Melbourne Chorale. In 2000 he returned to all these orchestras for further concerts that included the Australian premieres of "The Confession of Isobel Gowdie" by James MacMillan, and "Jewish Chronicle" by Hans Werner Henze, Paul Dessau, Boris Blacher and Karl Amadeus Hartmann.

In the field of opera he conducted Gluck "Orfeo", Donizetti "La Rita" and Pergolesi "La Serva Padrona" for the celebrated Dartington International Summer School and in France for European Chamber Opera he conducted an acclaimed Mozart "Die Zauberflote". He conducted "Don Pasquale" on tour through the UK, received invitations to conduct "Eugene Onegin" for Opera North and worked with Peter Ebert on "Benvenuto Cellini" and "Aida" for New Sussex Opera.

Acknowledged as one of the world's leading choral conductors and trainers, Jonathan Grieves-Smith has held positions with Brighton Festival Chorus, the Halle Choir and Huddersfield Choral Society. As guest conductor he has worked with the BBC Singers, Chorus of the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, the London Philharmonic Choir and Royal Choral Society, at London's Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music and at the Europa Cantat Festival in Denmark and Austria.

He has worked with all the leading conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa, Lorin Maazel, Yuri Temirkanov, Leonard Slatkin, Andre Previn, Vladimir Ashkenazy and the late Klaus Tennstedt in recordings and concerts and at festivals such as the BBC Proms, Brighton, Flanders, Bath, Strasbourg and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

Of his debut with the Halle Orchestra, the critics wrote:

"Vaughan Williams' London Symphony was built with an almost Mahlerian intensity. It was a young man's view of the work, fresh and without cynicism. In a reading of strong ideas and careful control, the conductor showed a surprising affinity for its idiom. The orchestra played like demons: lovely strings, blazing brass."
